Gas Pump Debate

We get a lot of people that come in, prepay for gas and then forget to pump their gas. Usually they will just get in their car and leave, totally forgetting that they just paid me for gas.

Sometimes they come back when they remember, and sometimes they don't.

If they DO come back, most of the time the gas is still sitting there prepaid on the pump and waiting to be pumped.

Sometimes, however, while that customer has forgotten they paid for gas and driven away, another car will pull up to the pump, insert their credit card and assume they are pumping gas on their card. What they are actually doing is pumping the gas that the previous person had paid for and forgot.

Simple enough, right?

When this happens, we have no idea. We don't watch every customer to make sure they fill their car up. Once you pay us inside, our job is done. It is now YOUR responsibility to pump your gas and not forget about it.

What I don't understand is that when a person forgets and we figure out that someone else pumped their gas, this person wants us to still set the pump for them even though someone already took their gas.

They say that they paid for $10, $20, whatever...and they want their gas.

It's not our fault if you forget to pump and someone else took it. At least, that's my opinion on it.

What do you think? Do you think it is the store's responsibility if a customer forgets to pump their gas and another customer pulls up and pumps it?

  1. IMO, if your are dumb enough to drive off without pumping the gas you paid for you deserve to have someone else take it :)

  2. With gas costing so much right now, how the hell could you forget to pump it? If they are that brain dead then they must be able to afford to forget :)

  3. What Edie said. Geesh. How can they forget?

  4. not at all. Ive had this happen, I saw one guy come in and pay for 10 bucks. then he sat at his car for 15 minutes, I had to go to the back and get some cups and came back and he was gone. He came back 2 hours later, and trying to tell me it was only 20-30 minutes ago telling me his gas guage was still on E.

at another store I worked at, when people paid and drove off, we would clear it off the pump so the register would owe the customer money, and that money was pooled in the drive off fund by the manager.

  5. Pay for gas and then forget to pump it? I often wonder how some people manage to even get dressed in the morning!

  6. Well...it sounds as if people who pay for gas, forget to pump and drive off are being pegged as "dumb", "idiots", "brain dead", and even "dumber than fucking hammers". Hmmm...Since, I did in fact pay $9.00 cash for gas and then got into my car and drove away to pick up my Daughter from 1st grade, I must be all of the above! Not! As humans, we love to judge. Even me.
If you consider all of the relative possibilities (which are endless) and usually reasonable, that a human being in our society today could actually forget to pump gas after they've paid, then perhaps you are not actually "thinking" either.

    1. Same here, did the same thing and probably have accomplished more than any of those judge-mentals combined...shit happens. Should be the protocol to reset and refund so long as same day.

  7. responsibility comes down to the basic integrity of the particular station involved. The pump has to be reset on every transaction. So, no-one can technically "steal" your gas! Think about it! Have you ever pulled up to a pump and it says, "prepaid gas in the amount of $9.00"? Both the cashier and the managers are aware. My responsibility is that I forgot to render after giving tender. It happens. And not only at gas stations. The responsibility of the cashier, managers and owners is to honor what was paid for and provide them with whatever it is they paid for. Not to steal the consumers money because they think they can. 76 Auto Care at 5100 25th Ave NE Seattle, WA 98105 will not be happy with their feeble attempt to deny me my paid for gasoline at 3:30pm when I returned with my daughter to collect my gas. They pulled the "shift change" receipt from 3:00, stating that the "cashier's" till would have been $9.00 short and was not. They even showed me that 3 times. When I asked to see the camera recording of her shift change, the man and woman began yelling at me in front of my 6 year old and provided a feeble $2.00 so that my empty tank could get to the bank. I offered to show them that my tank was well below empty and they simply refused stating that another customer must have pulled up and used their card and "stole" my measly $9.00 along with their purchase! It's a matter of principle for me. If you buy groceries and forget one of the bags, isn't it always there waiting for your return? I suppose someone could inadvertently take that bag with their own groceries and you would be S.O.L. Yet, there are always cameras and there is the "re-setting the pump" technique that all modern gas stations use. Especially this one. I am appalled. Evidently, there is a fine line between principle and plain THEFT. Thank you to Molly Rimerez (manager) and Jim Khan (owner) for setting a great example (in front of my daughter) of blatent "lack of integrity". For that, I will be there first thing tomorrow to return the $2.00 you took out of your pocket (as if to appease me) or most likely to justify the theft of my $9.00. For a profit of 1-2.5 million dollars annualy, I wish for you a different heart.

  9. If one can steal gas, then the opposite must be true, a service paid for must be given

  11. There goes my faith in humanity. Sometimes people just have a bad day and forget things. I guess the term "Customer SERVICE" has no meaning anymore just because some people are a little scatter brained from time to time. And here I was hoping to find some people who had the decency to reset the pump and process a refund, at least. You'd think that would be protocol.

    1. I absolutely Agree Switchblade Evo..I like the way you said that! Customer Services,It should be a Protocol.
I am a parent of 8, and I can be forgetful at times. I did this yesterday with absolutely alot on my mind. I had a purchase in my hand, then added gas. Sometimes people can distract you by talking to you, Trying to get my attention, etc
(I'm an attractive Individual so this happens often),or simply Just Adding something extra to your purchase and BOOM You walk out being distracted and you Forget! Unless your Absolutely on E, I think you won't forget to pump your gas because that Gas Light will remind you.
Customer Services is about being compassionate and making things Right for the people like me who forget to pump they gas after a rough day at work! I bet if a cashier forgot to clock in, came into work and started working they would want their boss to adjust they time. Cashier's don't want to work for free, Just like us "FORGETFUL PEOPLE" would want Our Gas that we paid for and Left behind. 😉

  14. Or you couldve just ran into the store real quick and tell them to cancel the transaction OR you couldve just pumped the measly $9 i mean how long does that take to happen? Like 1 min top?? You were at fault buf u cant just assume everybody is gonna be out there to look out for you. Thats life, some gas stations dont follow every others gas station"s rules. You could've avoided this but you just ASSUMED things would turn out your way. And of course if you forget your groceries at the cashier they'll just keep em there for you until you come and pick them up. Just like the gas station did but the next customer went ahead and too it from you. Gas stations dont always look out for people pumping gas wth

  16. I get this all the time at my store, sometimes it’s a scam & other times it’s not! Tobacco, Alcohol, Lottery & Gas are USUALLY no goes for refunds. In most cases, once you leave the premises it’s a done deal.
