I Ran Out of Gas, Can I Have Yours?

Man Busted Siphoning Gas with Hose in Mouth

Caught siphoning gas from a court house parking lot. Really? Couldn't you have picked a place that didn't have a lot of cops hanging around?

I'm surprised I haven't seen this at my store. Since we really don't have drive-offs anymore due to our 'Pay First' policy, I thought I'd see people trying to steal gas in other ways.

Instead, what I usually see are people hanging around outside asking customers for money. These people will come up with some sob story about how they ran out of gas and need to get to the hospital to pick up their grandma.

These people probably make a good living every day by claiming they need gas money.

Usually when I see people do this, I will go outside and tell them to leave, because I know it makes our regular customers uncomfortable.

If someone was outside of a store asking me for money, I probably wouldn't go back to that store if there were many others like it around. Would you?

  1. I had a guy come up to me once in a shopping center parking lot asking me for some spare change for gas. I forgot the exact sob story he tried to pull, but when I told him I didn't have any change on me, he walked back to his car that was nicer than mine, and drove away.

  2. Every once in a while people will ask me for money outside at a gas station. If I decide I might believe the story, I will prepay for them. And wait to see if they actually put the gas into the tank. I won't give them the money directly and I wait to make sure they don't try to get a refund without pumping the gas. Too many con artists makes it hard to know when people do actually need help.

  3. I often give the money to people, if only because I've been very blessed in life, and don't have to make money by begging people on the streets. Stopping by from SITS - I love the concept of your blog!

  4. I live in California. There are those who beg everywhere. Everywhere. So, if I didn't go to stores that begging wasn't allowed there would be no place to shop. Just saying.

Have a terrific day and weekend. :)

  5. I always say no I have just enough to put money in my tank so I don't run out of gas too.
