The Top Newspaper

I would just like to know why people never take the top newspaper?

What's wrong with the top one? Every morning I will watch as people try and pull a paper out from pretty much the bottom of the pile, nearly knocking all the top ones over, just to get to that paper.

I mean, don't they all eventually end up as the top one?

I've been confused by this for a very long time now. I've asked some customers, but all they do is shrug and smile.

It's especially amusing to watch on a Sunday, when the newspaper is nice and thick. All the papers get messed up on Sundays just from people trying to pull one from the bottom.

I'm still waiting for the day when the whole pile of newspapers comes crashing down on someone.

Can anyone shed some light on this topic for me?

  1. Your customers are OCD. All of them. They don't want the ones on top because they have bent corners and stuff.

  2. Because the ones on the bottom seem more "fresh" and untouched by the masses. I know. Weird.

  3. For me it's out of habit. I remember being a kid and the coupons used to be AWESOME, watching people pay for a newspaper, open the door, grab one, then take the coupons out of the next one on top. My mom used to remind me to grab from the middle so we made sure to get the coupons.

Still to this day, I still take from the middle. It's sad really I know.

  4. I am notorious for this too. I always think someone has gone through it and I want an untouched copy. I know we are mental.

  5. Yep. Everyone's pretty much already covered it here. Same reason you take the milk from the back, the shirt from the middle of the stack. You mean you don't do it, too? What are you, normal?

  6. My grandfather always took the paper from the middle of the stack and I picked up the habit. I never really thought about why.

  7. Okay I have to admit, I do that kind of stuff too. I just wanted to see who else did it. :-)

  8. Thanks for visiting my blog. I will admit that I don't like the "top" paper at all. In class, at work, anywhere, I always aim for the bottom. :)

  9. Yeah, I don't take the top paper, but it's because I've worked in convenience stores for years. I've seen all the random customers come in, and while waiting for whoever they're there with, they rummage through the top paper. Things always get lost out of it. It's aggravating to get home and not have a section.
